Love Hotels, 2004–2005 | Misty Keasler

The Love Hotel is an intensely unique Japanese institution. The themed rooms rented by the hour provide a very private and anonymous place for couples for amorous liaisons. There are an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 of them in the country and they are so prevalent that the Japanese take them for granted. (One manager asked why I was photographing love hotels. I told him they were incredible and inventive and that the Japanese were quite imaginative. He got a perplexed look on his face and then asked what American love hotels were like).
