I posted images from Burtynsky’s Oil project (and his TED speech about it) earlier. Adding to this work, he has now documented the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. See the full 9-photo series here.

This is the extent of the 2010 Pakistan floods, shown relative to the size of the US. It would pretty much cover the Eastern Seaboard. We’ve probably all seen the BP oil spill superimposed over a local map by now. In a similar vein, the BBC has produced visualizations of other recent disasters, including Chernobyl and Bhopal. See how many of your neighbors would be affected if these disasters came to your hometown.

BP cleans up the oil spill with paper towels

Oh, they’re high-tech paper towels, let me assure you. But still, doesn’t it seem a little inadequate compared to the magnitude of the task? What a depressing read.
